The Munny Project - Part 2

The Munny Project

Come to the show! Details in the sidebar —>

Sub Woofer Weigh Down

So we have made considerable advances on the Munny Project in the last 3 days. One of which was one hell of a hiccup we had with the sub woofer’s first assembly attempt. Which I might add left both me and Matt terrified for over a day. However we have over come this obstacle and are moving forward.

The Munny Sub is very head heavy and we were worried it might tip over if it is bumped into or the bass pumped too loudly. So we milled over a few ideas of how to weight the sucker down. The chosen method was to fill him with pretty stones and then fill it up with hot wax because it would fill every little nook and cranny and keep the stones from vibrating.

Below is a diagram of what’s going on inside of the Mega Munny’s body right now.

Sub-Secret Video

I’ve got a video for you. Its our top secret Munny Sub bumping along! Its from my phone, so its kinda shoddy, but I think you can kinda get the picture of what is going on! Come to the show to see this puppy finished and in action!

LEVEL 2

Okay, so today we’ve begun the serious work, the works work, the work so top secret, we can’t show you everything we are doing…

We made some intense cuts this evening, and found out just how deep (and sticky) a Mega Munny can truly be. You’ll have to come to the show to see this finished product (and log onto the blog after the 25th to see full documentation of the project after the show) We need to save something for those who are coming!

There will be more test videos and Mega Munny teasers on the way so don’t lose interest now. The funs just begun

In the picture: Stone Texture Spray Paint, Electrical Tape, Soldering Gun, Glue Gun.

Sweet.

Progress up to this point has been great, except for the speaker wires all coming off my awesome soldering job. The first proto is almost totally dry can can probably be painted soon! News on the Mega is coming soon. It will be so amazing!

Mounted!

o we have officially mounted the first speaker and the rest are now following! Here are a few photos of the mount, which we will paint over with rough texture paint!

Soldering on.

Tonight was solder night. I dutifully worked away at the work bench removing the old wire tabs and re-attaching the long wires (we only had to do this due to the way the speakers were built).

I am by no means a master of electronics, so this was a bit of shooting in the dark, but it went off just great.

The Hardware (Crap we need speakers and an amp)

So the executive decsion was made that we really needed to get down to business on these Munnys and the best way to start was to get speakers. Without speakers any plan was just conceptual, and any attempt would be half hearted.

After talking about car audio vs. home theatre audio we decided in favor of the latter. Home theatres are designed to run surround sound, are allready set up for it (and are usually cheaper than car audio). In light of this decsion we made a hasty trip to XS Cargo to find speakers that sung to us.

We were sold on this:

RCA Home Theatre

RCA Home Theatre

A 1000 watt RCA 5.1(room for 1 error) home theatre system. With USB! Success!

Talking it out.

Jesse and I have been planning and talking and brainstorming about how we want this piece to go off. Its really tough to think about having to damage something once or twice just to get one right, but we have realized that sacrificing a few Munnys to make our speaker set perfect is inevitable. Luckily we have a few extra kicking around the house.

Some of you may have seen the Instructable on how to make Munny speakers. This is currently our base plan for how to fire these off, but hopefully have them look nicer. More like this one featured on the kidRobot site.

The Sub-Woofer is the last tough section to wrap our heads around. The larger Munny may be harder to cut, may need weighing down, and will probably need vent holes cut into it. Yikes.
